Gerard Pals PhD (GP) studied biochemistry in Utrecht and got a PhD in genetics at the VU University in Amsterdam (1986). He has extensive international experience due to his position as professor in molecular genetics at the Wayne State University and consulting scientist at Henry Ford Hospital (both in Detroit, Michigan, USA). He has collaborated with various industrial companies. GP has been responsible for the establishment in 1989 of DNA and protein diagnostics in the AZVU University hospital (now VU University medical center). In 1997 the Division DNA and Protein Diagnostics was formally established with Gerard Pals as head of Laboratory. This lab is national and international reference center for the diagnostics and research of inherited cancer susceptibility, connective tissue disorders, lung disease and other inherited diseases. 

From 2007 until his retirement in 2016, Gerard Pals was head of the Center for Connective Tissue research (CCT). He is still actively involved in research and supervision of MSc and PhD students. Current research is focussed on Osteogenesis imperfecta/Osteoporosis, Aortic aneurysms and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia. Pals published 257 peer-reviewed papers, with an H-index of 44.
